FAQs About Starting Battery

What is the difference between deep cycle and starting battery?
Starting batteries are designed for bursts of high current to crank engines, but they are not suited for prolonged power delivery.
Deep cycle batteries, on the other hand, are built to provide steady power over long periods and can reliably handle repeated deep discharges.
Using the wrong type for your application can lead to shortened battery life or failure to start your equipment.
CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) refers to the starting current a battery can deliver at -18°C. A higher number indicates stronger cold-cranking performance. For engines in cold climates or with larger displacements, a high CCA rating is crucial. Our lithium batteries can provide a higher CCA than lead-acid batteries of the same size, offering more reliable starting power in a compact form.
During engine cranking, a brief voltage drop is normal. However, if it drops below 10V, it typically indicates a potential issue such as battery aging, insufficient capacity, or an excessive starting current demand from the vehicle. We generally consider a drop to between 10V and 11V that quickly returns to normal after starting to be within the acceptable range.
Lithium starter batteries offer distinct advantages: they are lighter, have a higher power density, boast a longer lifespan, and charge faster. Their performance is also more stable across both high and low temperatures. For vehicles that require frequent starting or where weight is a critical concern, a lithium starter battery is a very worthwhile option to consider.
The connection between a starter battery and a deep-cycle battery must be made through a “battery isolator” or “dual-battery manager.” Directly connecting them in parallel will cause the two batteries to charge and discharge each other, damaging the lifespan of the battery and creating a circulating current during engine start due to a voltage imbalance. The isolator ensures the two batteries operate separately: the starter battery is dedicated to engine cranking, while the deep cycle battery provides continuous power to other appliances.

  • Small Displacement (Small Cars / Motorcycles): 200–350 CCA
  • Mid-Size Engines (Common Sedans / SUVs): 350–600 CCA
  • Large Gasoline Engines or Medium Diesel Engines (Large Pickups / Light Diesel Vehicles): 600–800 CCA
  • Large Diesel Engines (Heavy-Duty Trucks): 800 CCA and above
